The most natural  Indigo was obtained from the Indigo plant called Indigofera Tinctoria and is common in the tropics . Indigo was used in India which was the earliest center for its production and processing. Indigo is used mainly for blue jeans and is also used as a food colorant. Indigo powder is extracted from the leaves of the plant which is then put to many uses including dyes and colors. Indigo has been used to dye hair alone or in combination with Henna to dye hair black for at least 4000 years. It was a very common hair dye in the 19 th and the 20 th century, especially in the US and Europe and was known as “Black Henna”. However Henna is never black and can never dye hair black, but Indigo powder does resemble Henna and does dye hair black and so is called “BLACK HENNA”. It is the most prominent ingredient of our natural hair colors.
